History of Basketball
Basketball was invented by a canadian called Dr James Naismith in the year 1891 for young athletes to play during the winter. The equipments for the game back then` was a peach basket and a ball similar to soccer. He first only created 13 rules but later on more was created. Every time someone scores a point, someone has to get a ladder and get the ball out of the peach basket. Due to time consuming he decided to make a hole under the peach basket so they dont have to climb a ladder to get the ball out of the basket. Not long after, the first public basketball game was played in Springfield, Massachusetts, on March 11, 1892.
James Naismith
James Naismith was born in Canada on November the 6th, 1861and past away on November 28th, 1939. James Naismith was the only child that was survive in the year 1982. He was struggling at school but however he was talented in farm labor work. Naismith didnt really like school however he really liked playing sport and usually spends his time playing hide-and-seek or playing catch. He then enrolled in Almonte High School in Almonte, Ontario, Canada which he graduated in 1883. In the same year he entered McGill University in Montreal. He was a very talented athlete and represented Canadian football, lacrosse, rugby, soccer and gymnastics in McGill University. He has won multiple Wicksteed medalsfor outstanding gymnastic performance. james Naismith earned a BA for Physical Education in McGill University and soon after he graduated and became a phsical education teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. By 1900 Basketball soon became a popular sport. It was announced as a Olympic sport on 1936 and James Naismith known as the president of International Basketball Federation handed out the gold medal for America, the silver for Canada and bronze for Mexico.
James Naismith Personal Life
James Naismith was the eldest child of Margaret and John Naismith which migrated from Scotland. Naismith's mother, Margaret Young, was born in 1833. His father, John Naismith, was born in 1836 which left Europe when he was 18, and also settled down in Lanark County. On June 20, 1894, James Naismith married Maude Evelyn Sherman in Springfield, MA, USA. They had five children: Margaret Mason, Helen Carolyn, John Edwin, Maude Ann and James Sherman. Maude Naismith died in 1937, and on June 11, 1939, he married his second wife Florence B. Kincaid. On November 19th, 1939 Naismith has been suffering from major brain hemorrhage (internal bleeding) and died nine days later in his home at Lawrence Kansas. Naismith was 78 years old and is buried with his first wife in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence. KS.Florence Kincaid died in 1977 at the age of 98 and is buried with her first husband Dr. Frank B. Kincaid in Elmwood Cemetery in Beloit KS.
